On November 12, 2025, the Youth Placemaking Balkans initiative reached a major milestone as project partners gathered in Sofia, Bulgaria, for the project’s final meeting. Moderated by the lead partner, BG Be Active, the session was a vibrant space for reflection, celebration, and strategic planning for the future.
Far from being just a wrap-up, this meeting was about turning years of collaborative effort into a lasting regional movement that keeps young people at the very heart of city life.
The day began with a deep dive into the impact we’ve made across the region. We looked back at the successful completion of various youth-led projects that breathed new life into public spaces and the national dialogues that finally gave young citizens a seat at the table with decision-makers.
It wasn’t just about the work done, but the lives touched. We reviewed how our efforts reached a massive audience across the Balkans, successfully meeting our goals to inspire a new generation of urban activists. Most importantly, we looked at how these experiences helped young leaders grow their skills in teamwork, leadership, and critical thinking—transforming them from observers into active “owners” of their cities.
A highlight of the meeting was the Regional Youth Placemaking Mentorship exchange. Youth delegates from Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Greece, and North Macedonia came together to share their stories, challenges, and dreams for their neighborhoods.
This sense of regional unity is the backbone of our sustainability plan. We finalized the Youth Placemaking Online Course, a free, permanent resource that is now ready for the world. With versions in every partner language, this tool ensures that anyone, anywhere in the Balkans, has the knowledge to start their own local revolution in urban design.
To ensure the project concludes as strongly as it began, the team focused on the vital administrative steps that document our success.
The meeting was conducted in a spirit of democracy and cultural diplomacy, a methodology that has defined this project from day one. In a non-formal and productive atmosphere, every partner had a voice, ensuring that our final reflections truly represented the diversity of our region.
We also reaffirmed our core principles: keeping our activities green, inclusive, and digital. From using inclusive language in our visuals to leveraging digital tools for better coordination, we’ve worked to minimize our footprint while maximizing our heart.
The Sofia meeting was more than just a final checkmark; it was a celebration of a new, sustainable regional movement that proves when you empower youth, you change the world.
